Superdrug Paco steeds als ‘nieuw’ ontdekt
Periodieke oprisping over Argentijns gevaar brengt nu New York Times tot plagiaat.

Het heet Paco. Dat staat voor Pasta de Cocaina. Vooral Argentinií« consumeert veel van het goedkope, maar krachtige afvalgoedje.
Want het is sterk. Zo alarmerend sterk dat journalisten ermee aan de haal gaan. Als eerste was daar de brave Christian Science Monitor die op 5 april 2006 schreef: A new scourge sweeps through Argentine ghettos: ‘paco’; Abuse of the highly addictive cocaine byproduct ‘paco’ is causing officials to revamp drug laws.”
Op 12 augustus 2006 ontdekte de Miami Herald haar Paco: “Argentine cocaine trade growing: Traffickers are setting up cocaine labs in Argentina, long merely a transit point for cocaine, and creating new addicts with ‘paco,’ a cheap, toxic byproduct.”
Ruim een jaar later luidde de bel in Engeland, bij de BBC met een publicatie op 29 augustus 2007: “Drugs scourge takes hold in Argentina; Whichever figures you read, they’re alarming.”
En daar was ook de New York Times op 23 februari 2008 nog: “Cheap Cocaine Floods Argentina, Devouring Lives”.
En ja, wat is er eenvoudiger om terug te grijpen. Dat deed de schrijver. Die pakte en plakte uit het artikel van Miami Herald: “”Paco is highly addictive because its high lasts just a few minutes—and is so intense that many users smoke 20 to 50 paco cigarettes a day to try to make its effects linger. Paco is even more toxic than crack cocaine because it is made mostly of solvents and chemicals like kerosene, with just a dab of cocaine, Argentine and Brazilian drug enforcement officials said.”
En ontdekt. Schaamte bij de NYT. Die erkent de fout: we hadden de omschrijving in eigen woorden moeten doen, of de bron Miami Herald moeten noemen.
Dat onverbiddelijke geheugen ook dat internet heet, en geen paco’s rookt”¦
